2. New CEO appointed at The Lung Association

The Lung Association is pleased to announce the appointment of Heather Borquez to the position of President and CEO. Ms. Borquez brings a wealth of experience with her. She has worked in both national and international roles for such organizations as UNICEF, CARE and Plan. In her various roles, she has been directly involved in leading health programs and health education projects. She also has significant fundraising experience.

Ms. Borquez, who speaks English, French and Spanish, will take on her new responsibilities in mid-September.

3. The CTS at CHEST 2009, San Diego, California

    The CTS is proud to partner with the American College of CHEST Physicians on CHEST 2009. Recognized around the world as an authority in clinical chest medicine, CHEST 2009 will offer unique opportunities for clinical education and professional growth. Special meeting features and education sessions will give you up close, often hands-on, opportunities to experience evolving techniques and practices that can help you advance your patient care.

    CTS members pay the same registration fees as do ACCP members (saving $300)! If you are not an ACCP member and wish to avail yourself of this benefit, you must register for the conference online, using an ACCP member number. 4. New CME Policies Adopted at CTS

As part of the process of renewing its status as a RCPSC accredited CME provider, the CTS has developed the following policies to guide the process of developing and accrediting CME programs:

CTS Education Policy on Interaction with Industry

These policies will soon be available online, along with information on the submission of applications for accreditation of CME programs.

5. CTS Membership: For the second year in a row, over 500 members have renewed their membership in the CTS! Encourage your colleagues who are not members to join our ranks and help us continue to improve respiratory medicine and lung health in Canada. Anyone joining before CHEST 2009 will receive an invitation to the CTS reception in San Diego!

6. Attention CTS Members Residing in Alberta:

The Lung Association, Alberta & NWT will be launching a website on occupational lung disease (OLD) in the province. This website has been reviewed by provincial OLD specialists and will be targeted to the public. It will contain general information on OLD, steps to reducing risk factors, FAQ’s, and a listing of Alberta testing clinics. During the review of the web content, the specialists mentioned that it may be useful to contact CTS members in Alberta who may have a special interest in the area and determine their interest in being listed as a resource for further information. If you are interested in being listed or would like further information, please contact Connie Wong at cwong@ab.lung.ca or (780) 488-6995 x2252.

7. Funding Offered

  • Applications are being accepted for The Lung Association / GlaxoSmithKline / Canadian Institutes of Health Research – Research Fellowship Program. The goal of the program is to encourage a broad spectrum of post-doctoral fellows (PhD and MD) to train in the field of asthma or COPD.

  • National Lung Health Framework: The Public Health Agency of Canada recently released a request for applications for funding. This funding represents the 2009-2010 portion of the $10 million investment into respiratory health activities announced by Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq in April, 2009. Click here for details.

8. New Sources of Health and Medical Information

  • The Lung Association's national website has new content that may be of interest to you and your patients:

    Searchable databases of respiratory disease program and service locations, including asthma clinics, COPD support groups, lung testing sites, and rehab classes. Just go to the online databases and key in a postal code or city. You’ll get a list of local programs, an interactive Google map, contact information, and particulars on what kind of patients are accepted and whether they need a referral.

    Consumer health information on H1N1 flu available at www.lung.ca/h1n1flu.

    Updated content on COPD medications offered at www.lung.ca/COPD.

    The new content has been written for a lower-literacy audience. A print version of this information should be available in the next few weeks.

  • The National Lung Health Framework has launched its new and improved website for respiratory health stakeholders. The website features background information, as well as updates on the Framework’s progress, including funding opportunities. In addition, the website serves as a gateway to a wide range of information tools that will support the work of individuals and organizations working to improve lung health.   • The Stop TB Partnership's New Diagnostics Working Group has launched a new website resource called Evidence-based Tuberculosis Diagnosis, available at: www.tbevidence.org . The Website aims to provide the most comprehensive single source of evidence syntheses, policies, guidelines and research agendas on TB diagnosis …and much more!Click here for details on this new TB resource.

  • Health Canada has launched a Website on H1N1 flu virus that includes sections on surveillance and pandemic preparedness.
