The CTS Executive extends its sincere thanks to former board member Irvin Mayers, who served as Research Committee Chair from May 2005 to October 2009.
- The CTS is happy to announce that Dr. Pearce Wilcox has accepted to chair the 2010 CTS Scientific Program that will be held in Vancouver B.C., in conjunction with CHEST 2010. Dr. Wilcox succeeds Dr. McFadden who provided leadership to the CTS scientific program for several years.
Kudos and special thanks to Rob McFadden for his dedication that resulted in the delivery of outstanding CTS scientific programs!
2. CTS Annual Report to Members 2008-2009

3. Professional Development Committee Announces New Accreditation Procedures
The Professional Development Committee has introduced the following procedures with regard to accreditation of CME programs under the Maintenance of Certification Program:
Application for Accreditation - Provincial Thoracic Societies:
Consult the summary of requirements, fill in and submit your application form along with the society accreditation fee of $375 at least 8 weeks before your CPD program takes place. The fee includes a non-refundable deposit of $125.
Application for Accreditation - Other Physician and Non-physician Organizations:
Consult the CTS’ Co-Development Policy and contact the CTS at the very beginning of the program development process to request co-development of your program with the CTS.
The CTS no longer accredits programs developed independently by organizations other than provincial thoracic societies. For information on other accrediting bodies to which you may submit your application, consult the Royal College of Physicians’ and Surgeons of Canada's Web site.
4. CTS Scientific Program
Evaluation: Did you attend the CTS Scientific Program at CHEST 2009? If so, and haven’t yet filled in an evaluation form, it’s not too late to do so! The online survey will be accessible until Friday December 4th. Thanks to all who have already submitted their evaluation forms or completed the online survey.

6. Third Annual Canadian Respiratory Conference (CRC) is Coming Soon!
The CRC Scientific Committee, chaired by Dr. Rob McFadden, and co-chaired by Drs. François Maltais and Darlene Reid is hard at work, developing a captivating program for the next edition of “A Breath of Fresh Air”. A wide range of topics as they relate to adult and pediatric respiratory health will be addressed, including interdisciplinary care, knowledge translation, spirometry interpretation, care maps, emerging technologies, environmental factors, physical exercise, pulmonary rehabilitation, respiratory care in the ICU, and much more!

7. The Lung Association, Canadian Thoracic Society (CTS) – Research Fellowship and Studentship Program
The Lung Association offers two types of research trainee awards to the medical and scientific community in the field of respiratory health: post-doctoral fellowships and PhD graduate studentships.

8. Asthma Case Studies
A series of 7 case studies have been published in the on-line version of the Canada Medical Association Journal. This case study series was developed as a knowledge translation initiative of the Canadian Thoracic Society Asthma Committee under the past Chair, Dr. Andrew McIvor (2005-2008). The series aims to educate and inform primary care providers and non-respiratory specialists about the diagnosis and management of asthma.
The key messages presented in the cases are not clinical practice guidelines but are based on a review of the most recent scientific evidence available. We encourage you to have a look at these informative articles at www.cmaj.ca with the most recent article accessible by clicking here.
