Faces of Asthma - Lica

Lica Feraru, Vancouver, BC

I've had asthma since Summer of 2005! It attacked me when I came down with a cold while out province. It me 4 days of figthing for my life with doctors in the ER in Yellowknife, NWT! I had symptoms of difficulty breathing; chest felt like there was a brick on it; difficulty walking and using stairs and throwing up a lot! Finally on the 4th day I was treated and diagnosed with asthma which I have still to this day and given a prescription for the inhalers which the Social Services paid for while I was in Yellowknife at the time which finally saved my life!

I used to be in the ER at VGH here in Vancouver with asthma attacks a couple years ago; not anymore because it is under control where I now use my (rescue) inhalers a few times a month when needed not everyday like I used to! Some symptoms are similar to that of that of a heart attack! Even now I am disabled with 2 spinal injuries and wheelchair-bound since 2006 ; I have been put on antibiotics everytime I got a cold; not anymore! I have been using the same medication and same dose for almost 6 years this summer and 5 years this summer in the wheelchair since my injuries! My health has greatly improved in the last couple years which has been a blessing and have not been in the hospital for a years! I've enjoyed my last 3 years of good health and no asthma attacks! I do get chest tightness from time to time but very minor! I am happy to share my experiences and my story here with you!
