Federal Election 2011

Background information

Support for national action on lung health

Lung disease is on the rise in Canada. It is a leading cause of hospitalization and emergency room visits and affects the lives of millions of Canadians. One Canadian dies every 15 minutes from lung disease. The human and economic costs of respiratory illness are unacceptable in an age where modern technology, innovation and best-practices should be guiding how we combat the impacts of lung disease.

Canada has a new national action plan to reduce the heavy burden of lung disease.

The National Lung Health Framework is an ambitious plan to improve the respiratory health of all people living in Canada through co-ordinated and improved patient care, policy, programming, research and leadership. It is a plan that brings together a wide range of stakeholders and governments, working together to ensure its success. The federal government has funded the development of the National Lung Health Framework through the Public Health Agency of Canada.

We have the plan – now we need action.

Through the National Lung Health Framework Canadians will see improved prevention, research, detection and management of all forms of respiratory illness. This will help reduce hospital wait times and costs both in the healthcare system and the economy as a whole. To achieve these critical gains we need to put the plan into action.

The Lung Association is seeking commitments from all political parties to support national action on lung health:

  • Renewed funding of $20 million over three years to ensure full and successful of implementation of Canada’s first national action plan on lung health.
  • This would include investments to co-ordinate key strategies nationally, identify and fill critical gaps, and build partnerships between stakeholders and federal government departments and agencies for more effective delivery of programs and services that support lung health.
