Facts about smoking

Marijuana smoke

Marijuana comes from the cannabis plant. It's grown throughout the world and is considered the most prevalent illegal drug in Canada. Despite what some people may say, marijuana is not harmless.

Marijuana smoke contains over 400 chemicals; many of these are the same harmful chemicals found in tobacco smoke. Using marijuana can harm your lungs. It can also increase your risk for these diseases:

  • Chronic cough
  • Recurring lung infections
  • Cancer of the head and neck
  • Heart disease
  • Memory loss
  • Learning problems
  • Accidents
  • Mental health problems

Babies born to mothers who smoke marijuana can have health problems, including low birth weight and prematurity.
