The Canadian Lung Association is very pleased to announce the early-career researchers who received funding from CLA and its partners in 2022.
Twenty-two projects by researchers from British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec were awarded a total of more than $656,000. CLA and the Canadian Institutes for Health Research Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (CIHR-ICRH) funded 11 PhD studentships, five fellowships and one allied health fellowship. CLA also partnered with Cystic Fibrosis Canada to fund an additional allied health fellowship. Two Early Career Researcher in Asthma awards were also handed out, a competition led by Asthma Canada in partnership with CLA, CIHR-ICRH, AstraZeneca Canada and the Canadian Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Foundation.
“We were very impressed by the range of projects and number of applicants,” says Eilean McKenzie-Matwiy, PhD, CLA’s Manager of National Research Programs. “This is the first time the Canadian Lung Association has supported research projects investigating the health effects of vaping, the impact of wildfire smoke, early detection of lung transplant rejection and a randomized clinical trial for people living with chronic cough.”
“There were also three projects examining the differences in disease severity and outcomes in men versus women,” continues McKenzie-Matwiy. “It’s important to recognize that the development of a health condition and the outcomes may be impacted by biological sex.”
